A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
